All's Quiet on the Southern Front

Most of our Winter Texans have now migrated back or two stragglers are leaving this weekend, but it's pretty quiet around Leisure World these days. The boys have been digging to uncover the hot tub leak...I hope to get pictures as they start tunneling and will post anything I manage to get. Gary Bringham's projection cabinet had it's maiden outing last evening...small crowd but a good movie, "Somethings Gotta Give". The projector, DVD player, audio mixer, and associated cables are now residing securely in the cabinet...all is well. Thanks, Gary, we appreciate all you do for us.
Keep us posted with all that's going on in your and articles are welcome on the blog. If you're not an "author" on the blog...drop me an email at with a request to become one and an invitation will be on its way to you. More later.

New Cabinet

WOW - look what Gary Bringham is doing.... A nice large sturdy cabinet with large rollers, to hold the Digital Video Projector and equipment used for the Wednesday evening movies. The cabinet will soon have nice doors on the front and a finished coating. Dave will be so happy to use the finished product instead of using a food cart for the equipment. Can be used and then rolled away for storage. Thanks Gary - nice job.

Big Johns

This was the place to be on Thursday evening 04-23-09. There were approximately 35 Leisure World residents who enjoyed food and fellowship at Big Johns restaurtant.

All went away full and happy. Another great event.

Home in Nebraska

Hello from Omaha! We are settling back into the life at our home in Nebraska. It is so much fun to read the blog, and catch up on the happenings in Leisure world. It looks like everyone is having a great time. I enjoy it, but it also makes me somewhat homesick for Texas!! Bob, we have ben thinking of you, and so glad your surgery went well. As for the bike riders please be careful. None of you are as young as you used to be. I am sure none of you had to have me remind you of that . Your muscles probably tell you. Not much news. Just a thank you for keeping up the blog. We look forward to it every day! More later. Betty and Knobby

6.8 Miles

On April 16, 2009, Jack and George Napier organized a group of thirteen Leisure World residents for a bike/tram ride at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. 6.8 miles - are you sure it wasn't 50 miles.....

The bikers were Jack and George Napier, Dick and Phyllis Connett, Stan and Mary Gainer, Gary Bringham, Jim Edwards, Lupe Leal and Ron Workman.

While Shirley Bringham, Aida Edwards and Gloria Leal enjoyed the tram ride.
We all enjoyed the screnery and wildlife along the way.

Look good - up in the tree...
And Mary says - is this our tax dollars at work - is this the wall being built????

We weren't sure if Lupe was trying to get in or trying to get out....
The last stretch of the bike ride was heavy rock and very hard to ride a bike on... But we all made it back to the starting line.

And then of course we all had to stop for that huge hamburger at Gonzalez in Donna.

We were all very tired when we reached Leisure World that afternoon but was so glad to go on the ride and we thank Jack and George for organizing the group. We all had so much fun - and we are ready to go again.... Thanks Jack and George.

Pictures were taken by George Napier and Dick Connett.

Bob Clark Says Thanks

On April 13, 2009, I was taken to Knapp Hospital and went into surgery at 11:40 AM for knee surgery. The surgery was successful. Doctor Sander did a fine job and I am indebted to him and the surgery staff at Knapp. I was released on April 15, 2009, with thanks to Bill Collins who brought me home.

I would like to say Thanks to all who called and wished me well. Thanks to Kenny Hejlik, Lloyd Walker, Bill Hudson and Coleen Clark, all whom visited me in the hospital.

Thanks to Carol Slater and Shirley Remillard for helping me get my medication and other necessities of life. Dave Slater for giving me a shot and several others whom stopped by to wish me well. Thanks for the wonderful lunch on the 17th from Char Hejlik.

I appreciate what you all have done for me and again THANKS for everything.

Bob Clark

"You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown"

Once again, to my chagrin and great regret, I forgot to take my camera with me when we went out this pictures!
Carol and I have just returned from a most delightful evening. We attended an "amateur" performance of the musical play "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" held in the cafeteria of Harlingen South High School. It was the 3rd performance of the day for the group...the previous 2 were at two different elementary schools in Harlingen. Tomorrow two more elementary schools in Harlingen will be the performance sites...then the schedule is repeated next week. The Thursday evening performance is the only one where adults are invited to a ticket price of $10 for adults, 12 and under get in free.
These performances are the brainchild of Dr. Liebert, a Family Practice physician in Harlingen. He is the one that expounded the idea that this musical play carried a message about self importance and self worth that could help some elementary age children, while being just fun for a lot of them as well. He put together a group of volunteers...from high school and adult musicians, a cast that includes himself as Snoopy, a choir director from Harlingen South, and a whole group of talented and hard working young people, all middle school students. We heard about it from Allie Haden, a good friend, PEO sister of Carol's, and talented musician. She is well known as a church organist in Weslaco, and accompanies many recitalists throughout the Valley. Allie is the volunteer at the piano for all the performances of the musical.
Valley Baptist Hospital underwrote the cost of performance rights, Harlingen ISD made it possible to perform in the schools, and thanks were given to the Harlingen Performing Arts group for its support and assistance.
There was a small but enthusiastic audience for tonight's performance. One that awarded the cast a standing ovation at the finale. I have seldom enjoyed an evening as much as I did this was a performance that was far from professional, but it had the biggest heart you ever saw!
If you are within driving range of Harlingen South High School. Attend the final "open to the public" performance of "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" at 7:00 PM on Thursday, April 23rd, Harlingen South High School cafeteria. $10 per adult...take a child if you can find one...12 and under are free!

Movie Night

Even though we didn't have a full house on Movie Night, we all enjoyed this weeks movie which was Secondhand Lions. Dave is always so willing to start up the projector and Gary Bringham is there to make coffee for those who would like a cup. Very good choices on the movies that have been viewed.
Dave discussing some of the movies before getting started.
The rec hall is set up just like a theater as we relax and enjoy the movies. Wednesday night movies is a great idea.

A Shopping Spree

A fun day on Tuesday 04-14-09, for some Leisure World residents as we shopped in Hidalgo.
Is Dorothy trying to start a new "fashion trend" for the Leisure World ladies???

Now a woman can never have too many pairs of shoes.... Dorothy and Phyllis trying on shoe after shoe. I've never seen so many shoes on display. There had to be thousands in this building. Which one's do you look at first?

We were all so tired from shopping but couldn't pass up the chance to feed our faces again, so we all headed to Riverside to enjoy a meal together.

Those in the picture were the Shires, LaFoe, Hudsons, Hejliks, Decocks, Harms, Connetts and Nill.

Happy Birthday Mary

Happy Birthday To You

Happy Birthday To You

Happy Birthday Dear Mary

Happy Birthday To You

Was sung to Mary Gainer at Blackbeard's Restaurant on Padre Island, Wednesday April 15, 2009. Mary's husband arranged the outing with friends from Leisure World to celebrate Mary's ummm birthday. Friends traveling to the Island were Lloyd Walker & Mary Casey, Dick & Phyllis Connett, Styrl & Connie Little and Bobbi Shelton.

After the friends sang Happy Birthday, Mary sang her song to the tune of Happy Birthday To You, to the group.

Happy Birthday to Me

Thank You for sharing it with me

Thank You to my Dear Husband

God Bless All Of Ye!!

The waiters and waitresses sang Happy Birthday and what good voices they had. Mary then received Happy Birthday wishes from other patrons at the restaurant saying that today is their son's birthday.

It was a fun day. Thank You Friends and Stan for such a nice day!!

Tuesday Morning Summer Meeting

President Gary Bringham leading the summer meeting. Is it his great leadership that draws so many people to the meeting or is it the delicious rolls that everyone enjoys???

Thanks to Dan and Fran for selecting such good rolls every Tuesday meeting. A BIG THANK YOU to Bob Clark for furnishing the rolls. He is lying in that hospital bed and here we are eating up all his goodies. His knee surgery went well and he'll be at the next meeting.
Bill and Sandi Hudson with Ray LaFoe enjoying the meeting.

Now Dave says "Don't feed the trolls".... Is he trying to tell us all that we are trolls???

Meeting over with and people are heading for the pool and back home to get some chores done.... Good meeting Gary...

Easter Dinner

Easter Sunday about 55 plus Leisure World residents joined together at the rec hall for a good meal and fellowship. There were four full tables each decorated so brightly and all tables were full of baked ham, potatoes, breads, salads, desserts (You name it) - nobody went away hungry.

Thanks Scott and Shirley for organizing this event.

Tex Mex and Leisure World Cookout

April 9th, Leisure World residents met at Tex Mex for a fine dinner and a chance to visit with friends.

Good luck to Bob on his knee surgery on Monday.

A very good turn out.
April 11th - another great cookout and a good turnout.

Everyone enjoys the time getting together with their friends at Leisure World and someone(s) sure enjoyed the pumpkin pie as it only lasted for ten seconds.... This will be the last cookout for so many that will be heading back north in the next week, but they'll be back again next fall to enjoy the time together at the cookouts.
