Reiman Gardens-Ames, IA

One of our several camping spots so far this summer was Cutty's Des Moines Camping Club in Grimes, IA. It just so happens that Bill and Rosemary Hedlund live about 10 minutes from the resort, so naturally we had to get together for some R & R away from Leisure World. First we had a wee bit o' scotch on the deck of their condo in West Des Moines on Saturday night. Sunday morning there was breakfast (lunch) at the Machine Shed followed by a tour of the Civil War Exhibit at the State Historical Museum. Note that this is one of the few public facilities in our country where admission is still free!

Next day it was a trip to Ames and the campus of Iowa State U and especially Reiman Gardens. What a treat. Here's a few photos Shirley and I took.

On the return trip to Des Moines we stopped to see Leisure World residents Tom and Deanna Jones at Sheldahl, IA for cookies and home made ice cream. A tour of their yard yielded this next series of photos.

Not good news from Darlene Cook

Via email from Darlene!
Well I had a little experience, Lorn, came up to get me the morning of our anniversary,
and he couldn't wake me, he called Keith, and he said we needed to call 911,
so we had the police. fire dept, and an ambulance, here at our house, they had to bring
me down stairs in a wheel chair, I vaguely, remember several men in my room.
Then nothing till I woke up in a room, I was having bad leg cramps, they figured I .was
deheiderated ,so they gave a shot into my stomach, the Doc, says I  was a compete,
puzzle to him.
I have been wearing a back brace,  if it  and the therapy
don't help, it will mean back surgery."

Anyone Want a Puppy?

A couple of weeks ago we were getting ready to repair skirting on a mobile home when one of the guys heard a dog bark, then saw a Mama dog with her newborn puppies under the mobile home.

Linda DeCock lured the mother dog away with food so I could crawl underneath the home to get the puppies. It’s a very tight fit, plus there are spiders and other crawling things under there; I couldn’t get very far and was only able to reach 3 of the puppies.

Fortunately, Linda Shires Grandsons were visiting and they offered to crawl under to rescue the rest of the puppies. Matthew, Mick and Myles Poppe pulled out 5 more! There were 8 total and they were only about 1 week old.

Matthew, Mick and Myles saved the day! Assuming anyone else was even willing to crawl that deep into the underbelly of the mobile home, no one else would have fit.

The boys named the puppies: Matthew, Mick, Myles, Bear, Wonder Woman, Bella, Samantha and Lizzie. They are a Lab Mix -- 4 girls and 4 boys -- 3 white, 3 brown, 2 black.
The Leisure World Community has come together to help care for the dogs until they can be adopted out to good homes. Many, Many thanks to Tony Antonacci, Jim Edwards & Lupe Leal for building a temporary dog house in the dog walk area, Linda Shires for putting the skirting back up and donating for puppy medicine, Jim & Beth Staton for buying a baby bottle & dog food, Jerry & Cindy Keesee for buying and rigging a tarp over the dog house for shade, Debbie Collins for buying a baby bottle and helping me give the puppies a bath, Linda DeCock for giving the Mama food so we could grab the puppies and for helping me move them when it rained, Linda DeCock and Beth Staton for feeding the puppies (no small job and VERY MESSY), Marlene Beach for buying dog food, and a big thanks to all the ladies who have been visiting the babies to give them love.

If anyone wants a puppy or knows someone who wants one PLEASE let me know. They will be ready to go to new homes in 2 to 3 weeks. We may be able to hold on to 1 or 2 of them temporarily if any Winter Texans want one. . . .they are VERY, VERY, CUTE! The mama needs a home also, she’s young, loves to play, and is very well behaved.

Nurse's Reunion

Howdy all from Sherwood Park, Alberta. We have had an up and down spring with lots of rain. Most of you have heard about the record rainfalls and flooding in Calgary. It is a billion dollar plus disaster down there but thankfully we didn’t get anywhere near those amounts up in the Edmonton area. We are finally getting some real good heat (92f in the shade today) which will go a long way to helping out those flood victims and to getting crops well on their way to maturity.Speaking of maturity, Lorna and I attended Lorna’s nursing class reunion in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan this past week. This is the 48th year since they graduated back in ’65. There were six of the girls there with their husbands. We had nice weather and it was a wonderful get together. We stayed in a six suite fantastic B&B called the Wakamow Heights B&B with great views overlooking the city from the south. The 3 floor building was built in 1906 with brick construction. It has a solid oak staircase which is fantastic. It has a huge veranda along the west and north sides with a matching 2nd floor deck. Furnishings are all from that era which added to our delight.

Moose Jaw is a historic city with many attractions. It is home to the famed Canadian Forces Snowbirds aerobatic team. Another attraction is the Tunnels of Moose Jaw. One of the tunnels is about a laundry where Chinese workers basically slaves and were not allowed to be above ground. The second tunnel is said to be used by the gangster Al Capone during prohibition to brew up whiskey to be exported back to Chicago. Canada did not have prohibition, so by brewing here, he avoided the problems he would have faced in the US. Another attraction is Mac the Moose which claims to be the world’s largest moose at 32 feet tall weighting over 10 tons. These are definitely a must see when you are here!

The girls are now planning for their 50th anniversary year. Looks like an Alaska cruise will be the big celebration.

We Canucks celebrated Canada Day yesterday on our 146th birthday. To our American friends have a great July 4th holiday.
