Port Isabel Causeway Walk January 11, 2014

Early on the foggy morning of January 11, several carloads of walkers left Leisure World to head to Port Isabel/South Padre Island to participate in the 30th Annual Causeway Run & Fitness Walk. Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce sponsors the yearly trek across the Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge as one if its major fundraisers. The event originated as a way to celebrate the joining of Port Isabel and the Island with the causeway, which was completed in 1974. It is the second longest bridge in Texas, its 2.6 miles spanning the Laguna Madre. Runners have a chance to win $1000 for 1st place, $600 for 2nd place and $400 for 3rd place, while the walk is a participation event only. According to the newspaper, a new record was set with 4800 participants. Leisure World was well represented with :

Jack and  "george" Napier, Linda Shires, Fred and; Shirley Fischer,
Al and Hazel Oachs, Jan Shires, Art and Kathy Klassen,
Gary and Gerry Fischer, Lee and Karen Anderson, Charles and Betsy Mangrum,
Alice Cockerill, Janice Mahnke, Stan and Sue Heiderscheidt,
Blair and Marj Patience, Dave Vermeulen, Ray Bryne and Karen Smith,
Don and Joan Kurtenbach, Rob and Mary Beth Chandler, and  friends from another park.

My apologies if I have missed anyone.
At Port Isabel gathering for a nature break before beginning  the walk

Beginning of the walk in the fog

Nearing the finish line
There were only a few of our group that did not walk as they were our drivers who shuttled us to the start and picked us when we finished. That worked really well for us so that we didn't have to ride the shuttle bus and could beat the crowd getting to our favorite place to eat--Dirty Al's Pelican Station.

We really enjoyed the day getting out and having fun with friends and in the process getting healthy. We had a great day, saw some dolphins near the causeway, and enjoyed LOTS OF DELICIOUS FOOD! That's what it's all about! And next time..... maybe more of you will want to join us.

ROPA

Ruby Lowderman is back in town (for a few days) - and with Fran Foxhoven and Phyllis Connett, the three had a great time visiting ROPA together.

It doesn't take much to have fun when friends are together.
We were about ready to keep Ruby behind bars, but then decided it was time to go home.  But first we had to have lunch at McAlisters Deli.  It was a chilly but fun day.

Leisure World Sisters

On Wednesday, January 22nd, there were twenty-one Leisure World Sisters who met at Milano's restaurant in Weslaco.  This was a yearly gathering hosted by Phyllis Connett, Trudy Hauserman and Carolyn Richeson.
Seated in front are sisters Eleanore Strobel and Millie Lombard, Seated - Betty Stoulil (mother of Vicki Konya and Annesta Bennett) and seated - Donna Fisher.  Middle row:  Sisters Phyllis Connett, Carolyn Richeson and Trudy Hauserman, Terry Caywood and right behind her is sister Nan Alden, Sisters Bobbi Rising and Phyllis Johnk, Sisters Hazel Oachs and Mary Bergemann, Sisters Verna Louze and Marian Smith, Vicky Konya (Annesta Bennett's sister).  Back row:  Sisters Cindy Keesee and Kim Savage, Annesta Bennett, and Sisters Betty Hansen and Maryann Gathje.

This year two new sets of sisters from Leisure World joined us.

Bobbi Rising and Phyllis Johnk

Each sister was assigned with a "name tag" so all could get acquainted with others.  A "sisters" poem was read, sisters introducing their sister(s) and two lucky sisters sat in the "right" spot for a prize.  Each sister was asked to bring non-perishable item(s) to help out another family.  As you can tell in the picture there was an abundance of food collected.  Thanks to all sisters for such a great gift for the Trevino family.
The food articles went to the Armando Trevino family who reside in Donna, Texas and was very much appreciated.

Our Leisure World Sisters gathering for 2015 will be hosted by Terry Caywood and Nan Alden.

A Very Special Birthday Party

Quinceañera (pronounced: [kin.se.aˈɲe.ɾa]; feminine form of "fifteen-year-old") is the celebration of a girl's fifteenth birthday. This birthday is celebrated differently from any other birthday, as it marks the transition from childhood to young womanhood.

Several couples from Leisure World were privileged to attend one of these very special celebrations Saturday, January 18th. The occasion was the Quinceañera of Emily, daughter of Maria Galvan's nephew.

Joining Wayne Oachs and Maria for the festive event at the Mercedes' Knights of Columbus Hall were Jim and Lorna Whyte, Bill and Ruby Busby, Joe Huntington and Lori, Bob & Jeanette Thompson, and Myril and Mary Ferguson.

An estimated 500 guests packed the hall for the ceremonies, meal and dancing. The contingent from Leisure World reported that it was an impressive and fun ceremony, and they appreciated having the opportunity to attend.

Illinois/Indiana Breakfast

Illinois/Indiana Breakfast took place at the Sun Rise restaurant on January 16th.  The table was full with about twenty in attendance.  Everyone had a good time visiting with each other and had a nice meal.  Thanks to Rob and Mary Beth Chandler for the great "hostess" job.  Our next outing will be hosted by Brent and Rita Langman.  Look for the sign up sheet in the back of the rec. hall for the place and time.
From one end of the table to the other....
