Ray Howard - Former Resident

We were saddened to hear of the death of former Leisure World resident Ray Howard. Ray and Helen were active in the Activities of the park, and Ray employed his skill as an electrician in assisting many of his fellow residents. They lived in Leisure World from 1999 to 2007. They then purchased a brick home at 2005 Bald Cypress here in Weslaco. Ray passed away on Friday, August 22. Helen expresses her heartfelt thanks for the many cards, calls and expressions of sympathy.

The Next Generation

We had our house repainted this week. We are pleased and think it looks great. However, Cindy Jalife noted the condition of LeoNerd, our guardian lion. She correctly noted that it was somewhat weathered.

I agreed and advised that I would be looking for a replacement, and update. Knowing how rapidly I move on a project (the tortoise has nothing on me when it comes to flat out speed), Cindy indicated that would be a good idea.

Cindy came knocking at the door last evening. Behold she delivered a gift of LeoNerd II.  He is now in place at the northwest corner of our newly repainted home!  Thank you, Cindy, we are now fully protected!

A Great Tour in Fredricksburg

Spent last weekend visiting Niel and Carol Powers at their home in Kerrville! Beautiful home, gracious hosts, lovely location! Needless to say, I can not thank them enough for their caretaking and hospitality. Carol (Slater) and Jewett were at a needlework get together in Kerrville, and I bummed a ride there and back and had wheedled an invitation from Niel and Carol.
While we saw and did many great things in the beautiful hill country, a highlight of the visit for me was a tour of the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredricksburg. Here is a photo of my hosts and me alongside a naval gun outside of the museum.

We spent over half a day touring the museum, and got less than halfway through the WWII Pacific exhibits. I can not praise the museum highly enough. I would recommend it to any and all, a couple of days in Fredricksburg. Texas, will be enlightening, educational, and a visit you won't soon forget. If you want to know more about the museum, here is the web page:
The admission tickets are valid for 48 hours...and if you visit you'll understand why so long.

Patio Sale

The LWAA Board has voted to delay the annual Patio Sale from the usual October date until November 8th this year. Maxine Rice will again be the coordinator, and it is hoped that any of our Winter Texans who wish to participate can plan now on an early enough arrival date.

Full Moon

Tonight the moon was as close to the Earth as it will get...and the full moon appears over 8% larger than usual. Even with the high clouds, it was a beautiful sight in Weslaco this evening.

Lawmen in the Valley

Our esteemed Governor Perry is keeping us safe from speeders here in the Valley while he is off campaigning in Iowa.  We made a quick trip to the McAllen-Miller  Airport early this Sunday afternoon to drop off a friend for a trip. Went our usual route, 281 (Military highway) both ways. During this 60 mile round trip, not counting any parked at the airport, nor the two troopers just pulling back on the street from lunch, we saw and were seen by 14 Texas State Troopers, 2 Pharr Police, 1 Border Patrol, 1 Constable, and one unmarked police car (the driver's uniform was a dead giveaway). While the north/south portions of the trip included just one trooper, for the entire trip this was an average of approximately l lawman each 3 1/6 mile. Can hardly wait for the 1000 National Guardsman that are being activated to provide backup for the troopers to start arriving. I've never seen Military Highway with lawmen shoulder to shoulder before.
Excuse my impromptu comments, I've got to go get my tongue unwedged from my cheek!
