Thanksgiving at Leisure World

Thanksgiving at Leisure World Community RV Park

Thursday, November 27, 2014 was a perfect day at Leisure World. Approximately 128 residents came to share a delicious meal with each other at the rec. hall. A turkey for each table was furnished by Leisure World Management which was appreciated. There was approximately 8 tables and each supplied their table with an abundance of good ole home cooking. A noon dinner took place and if we didn't get enough at that time, we all went back in the early evening to have more. Thanks to Linda and Al DeCock for organizing this event and thanks to management for the turkeys. What a wonderful day to reminise with our friends.

LW Jam

A lot of work goes into putting on a successful jam and preparing the food for all to enjoy.  Usually I put pictures of the entertainers and the house band.  Today I want to share with you pictures of the Volunteers who help make the meal a success.  This is by no means all of the volunteers.  This is all that I had time to photograph.

Carolyn Cornelious prepares ham for Hot Ham Sandwiches

Larry Hauserman making Sloppy Joe Sandwiches

Stan Gainer in line to buy his lunch.  Stan also sometimes MC's and he is an excellent PR man

November 25 Jam

The second jam of the 2014 season took place today. It was another winner! Lunch featured Ham and Cheese or Sloppy Joe sandwiches and was served from 11 am to noon. Then from noon to 2 pm the musical talent took the stage. If you weren't there you missed a most entertaining afternoon. Here are most of the performers.

Shuffleboard News

Welcome back to Leisure World! We are hoping for a better winter than we had last year but it sure isn’t starting out any better. In fact we may have had more rain in the first two weeks of November than we usually get in an entire winter. We are are through with our first two tournaments and both have had to deal with rain delays.

And so the Don Johnk Memorial Tournament was the second one of the season scheduled for  November 11-13. We were 20 entries down from last year at 31 Amateurs and 76 Experts. Wednesday was rained out after the second game of the Experts. So we delayed everything to the Friday. Experts played the remaining 3 qualifying games in the morning and we had all the finals in the afternoon. Leisure World ended up with two teams in the trophies. Laverne Soetebier and Bill Hudson won third in Amateur Main while Lorna Bentt and Dan Foxhoven won a third in Expert Consolation. Congratulations!

Laverne Soetebier/Bill Hudson

Dan Foxhoven/Lorna Bentt
3rd Expert Consolation
I want to thank Donna Colstrom and her team for the great job done in the kitchen. The meals were excellent and a quick switch to providing soup on the Wednesday was greatly appreciated by everyone. Donna informed me that the Kitchen profit was $1428. Add to that the profit from the entry fees of $415 and it puts a tidy sum of money into our association coffers.

I also want to thank all of the volunteers who got contestants parked and registered, pucks polished, boards cleaned, and refereeing done, etc. It always makes me proud to live in Leisure World with so many great volunteers.

My last thank you goes out to Danny Jalife and his team. The rain the week before put them a way behind on getting renovations done to the player benches. They worked hard up till Monday evening to ensure that everything was ready for Tuesday morning.

Now we are into a regular season of shuffling. We have made a change of times for the Shuffleboard Lessons to Tuesday afternoons at 1pm. We hope this change will encourage more people to come out and learn this terrific game. Ask anyone who plays and they will tell you that shuffleboard is a fun game that is challenging, but is easy on our old bodies. Friendly shuffle goes Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9am and Hoss Collar or Turkey Shoots on Saturday mornings at 9:30. Come out and join in.
