Leisure World Chapel: Joys and Concerns

Prayers are needed for the following

Michael Thompson, son of Bob Thompson, who is having more medical problems.

Brian Patten, son of  John and Rose Patten, who is experiencing ongoing health issues.

Claudia and Ed Lemar.  Ed has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. It does not appear to be cancerous. They are in North Dakota where he is having tests.

Bob Watkins is not doing well.

Joy:

Mary Gainer reports that her 3 year old great granddaughter who has juvenile diabetes is being monitored with a wonderful new device that monitors her sugar level and makes it so much easier for her caretakers to stay on top of her needs.  Praises for the new technology that improves the life of those suffering form such diseases.

                                                 HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

Happy New Year

In just a few hours, you will hear fire crackers, bells, and whatever to announce we are in a new year.  Can't believe another year (2017) is behind us.  I guess it is true, the older you get, the faster the years do fly by.  Happy New Year to all our friends and acquaintance...

Milanos

Milanos Italian restaurant in Weslaco, Texas was an enjoyable evening for a mixture of permanent residents and some winter Texans to chat and enjoy the food and meet new residents. Just one of the many activities that we did in 2017.  A little late in posting, but never too late for a new picture.....

Grandson's College Graduation

It's been awhile since I've been on the Leisure World Blog, but now taking a few minutes to share a great experience of attending our oldest grandson's graduation from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, December of 2017.  Dakota McClelland has now officially graduated from college.  Yipee.
Those graduating who have accepted their "Job" all wore the hard hats representing the company they will be working with.
Dakota McClelland, a construction engineering major from Waukee, Iowa, received several awards and honors while at Iowa State. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Lambda Chi, the construction engineering honor society, and was regularly on the Dean’s List.

McClelland has been a member of Habitat for Humanity since freshman year, for which he has served as treasurer. He has also served as treasurer and president of Sigma Lambda Chi. McClelland has held internships EES Companies, Ryan Companies, and twice with Turner Construction Company. He has also served as a tutor and peer mentor for the construction engineering learning community.

After graduation, McClelland will be working in Omaha for Turner Construction as a commissioning engineer. He will help to build a large data center for Facebook and will be responsible for commissioning mechanical and electrical equipment.

Dakota with proud  mamma Carrie Lea Connett Christensen.
Dakota with proud Grandpa Dick Connett and Grandma Phyllis Connett.
Congratulations Dakota.  We know how hard you worked and the many long hours you put into this education.  We are very proud of your accomplishment and know you will even go further now that you are starting on a whole new adventure with life.

Biggest Christmas Dinner Ever?

Some have speculated that this year's Christmas dinner had the largest attendance ever. Don't know for sure myself, but the hall was very full of both people and food.

After Bob Thompson asked the blessing, it was time to dig in.

Recovery OK, Not Loving This Cold Weather

We hope everyone had a great Christmas! And we are hoping for some trophies in the National Shuffleboard tournament. We hear that Laverne has been doing a great job running our two tournaments!

Recovery from my aneurysm surgery is going slower than I thought, but steady as it goes. Prognosis is good. Seen the surgeon last Wednesday and he said it is time to get in some walking. So we are walking lots now, although getting tired of walking the malls. We had a nice warm December until just a couple days before Christmas. It seemed that we wouldn’t have a white Christmas but mother nature complied and dumped a couple of inches just in time. But now we are into the deep freeze with daytime highs near minus thirty Celsius (-22F). Brrrrr! We forgot what an Alberta winter was like and aren’t used to that!

We wish y’all a healthy, happy New Year.

December Gospel Jam

The gospel was held in the LW Rec Hall on December 3, 2017.  We had a nice crowd to
listen and jammers.

Don Barnard, from Texas Trails and Rodney Crause from Quiet Village II have been part of
the stage band from the beginning of the jams in LW.  Jan Benson, from Texas Trails, is our
current keyboard player and has been with the band for three years.  Don plays lead guitar
and Rodney plays bass guitar.  Red Merryman, a former resident, of Leisure World, played
drums until last season when he decided to semi-retire.

Scotty and Shirley Marriner handle the sound for the jam but they were visiting their son
in Odessa, Texas for the first jam and Lewie Jett took care of the sound in their absence.
Thank You Lewie.  Scotty and Shirley will be on hand for the January jam.

Carolyn Cornelious and Yvonne Grimmius take care of refreshments at break time.  Ladies
donating cookies, cakes and bars for the December jam are:
Carolyn Cornelious, Yvonne Grimmius, Donna Thomas, Del Peterson, Rayma Bitters and
Mary Gainer. Thank You to these ladies for their generosity.

Thank You to Stan for starting this jam and keeping it going for eight years.

Thank You to Dick Connett for making coffee for us.

The next gospel jam will be January 7, 2018 at 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.  Please invite any
family and/or friends that you have if they play an instrument or sing.  Also invite anyone
that you know who enjoys listening to gospel music.  Everyone is important to making
this jam a success.

You Don't Know What You're Missing!

Every Tuesday the Rec Hall lights up at noon when the Leisure World Country Jam commences. For those of our blog readers who haven't attended, it is with pleasure that we invite you to do so. The music has been simply OUTSTANDING.

As you know there has been a Jam session going on here for a number of years. In particular the Stage Band is exceptional. Musicians, under the leadership of Lewis Jett on lead, include Mick Morrow on rhythm, Sean Lavole on rhythm, Steve Brown on bass and Pat Jet on drums. Performers, also, have blessed us with a high degree of professionalism along with many new songs not heard before. The quality and liveliness of our Leisure World Tuesday Country Jam is simply something you should come and enjoy.

If you wish a delightful, tasty lunch, come between 11 and 12 for homemade fare. Claudia Lemar and her various crews will serve you the absolute best!

Several couples enjoyed a little dance floor time this past week.

So please accept this invitation to enjoy a really great Tuesday. Talk to your friends and neighbors. Bring them all. The more the merrier.

BIG SHUFFLEBOARD TOURNAMENT HERE IN THE PARK NEXT WEEK, SO NO JAM. THEY WILL BEGIN AGAIN IN THE NEW YEAR ON JANUARY 2ND.

Big Bad Blog Bungle!!

Dear Leisure World Friends, Relatives and all the ships at sea or wherever you happen to be--

Disaster struck the blog this afternoon and I desperately need your help. Or more accurately I caused a disaster on the blog today and with your help I can correct it. As I explained at Tuesday's Park Association meeting, I inherited this administrator job from our dear friend, the late David Slater. It wasn't planned this way. It just happened.

After Dave died in August, there was no way for anyone to gain entry to the administrator's section of the blog. That was his domain, and for a while it seemed as though the blog would soon rest-in-peace also. At Dave's request I had been helping him, during his final days, reconstruct his own usernames and passwords. As such I was privy to his personal list, which unfortunately was quite messed up. By simply working things out and using the Trial and Error knowledge that we, as close friends, shared, I was able to reconstruct most of his internet addresses, including, at long last, an entry into the administrator section of the blog.

Since that time I have transferred the administrator's entry to my own name and have recently been assisting folks who wished to update their classified ads that David had previously placed on the blog. Today, I was attempting to enter two new ads on the blog, and while trying to match type face and color I inadvertently erased the entire Community Classified section. Not only was it gone. It cannot be retrieved! So here's where you can help. If you had a Classified ad on the blog, and you would like to have it continued, please jot it down on paper and bring it to me at our home at Lot # 221. Better yet, if you have computer access, please write your ad in a text form (even a simple email will be fine) and email it to me.

Things are back together now, after spending a whole afternoon figuring it out. I have placed two new ads along with one that I had recently received from Wally Bentt back into the Classified section. Now I'll be happy to re-insert your ads. I just need to have them again in writing.

Thanking you in advance.

Scotty--

P.S. Assuming you all wish to keep the blog going, we are in need of contributions. We'd like for you to post your own photos, thoughts and ideas for everyone to see. While there are many in the park who are able to log on as a contributor, there are many more who could if they wished. It is very easy to do so, and you will never, repeat NEVER, be in the situation I was in today wherein you would lose any portion of the blog other than perhaps your own. To become a contributor, send me an email with your request. You will receive the simple, easy to follow, instructions that will allow you to join ranks with all the other contributors. My email address is: ssmarriner2@msn.com.

Surgury Went Well!

Wally had surgery for a Popliteal Aneurysm on his left leg on November 30 at 7:15am. Home from the hospital on December 2nd at 11am. The incision is on the back of the knee is 10 to 12 inches long. It is a pain to start walking but once moving it isn’t so bad. He is getting in a couple thousand steps plus on his Fitbit. He will have to see the surgeon again in 6 weeks after which he may give him a clean bill of health, but we wouldn’t be able to get US medical insurance for at least another 3 months. And so we won’t be seeing our Winter Texan friends over the 2017/18 winter. We have our #320 up for sale, so if you know someone who is looking, have them contact Robbie or Winona Hood at Lot 724 or call (956) 369-1882 or email hoods@wthsinc.com. We miss y’all down there and are thinking of you often. We have taken up floor curling with sticks which is somewhat like shuffleboard (NOT). Big difference is it is indoors and so we won’t be getting a sun tan any time soon.
