Leisure World Joys & Concerns

Pastor Charles had the Angioplasty done and there is very good news.  There was very little blockage and he didn't need any stints.  Not sure when the aortic aneurysm procedure will be done but will let
you know. Meanwhile he is home.

Maxine Rice is home, out and about and looking great.

Dave Slater is at home recuperating.

Some might think it's a silly idea, and again some do enjoy the year round tree.  Each month the tree has been decorated to fit the "season".  You can now enjoy the "summer" red/white/blue tree at the ANNEX.  Phyllis Connett, Judy Hukill, Joannie Miller enjoyed doing this project.  Shirley Harreld joined us in decorating the red/white/blue.  Come October when we are all back, you'll see yet another look at the tree.

Everyone have a safe and enjoyable summer...  See you in October

Farewell Party

Dick Connett, Phyllis Connett, Ruth Elliot, Stan and Mary Gainer met at the annex and had ice cream and played cards.  2500 Rummy and Rummy Dummy was enjoyed by the group.  It is always sad to play that last game of cards with our friends.  We look forward to seeing everyone in Oct.  Everyone have a safe trip home.
Mary Casey and Lloyd Walker joined many Leisure World residents at The Ranch House for dinner Thursday evening April 27th.
Scotty and Shirley Marriner, Alex Kane and Jim Helmker pose for the camera before food was served.

Rob and Mary Beth Chandler also joined the group for those delicious hamburgers at The Ranch House.
What is that Don?  Darlene is trying to ignore you or the cameraman while Maxine looks on.   Maxine?????
Yes it is Maxine Rice.  It is so good to see you out with the group from Leisure World.  JoAnne Kurtenbach was busy talking on the phone so the cameraman didn't bother her to smile.
Linda Shires and Pat Lafoe smile for the camera, even though Pat was reluctant to give me a smile.  Thanks Pat.  Good Pic.
Sheila Kramer and Jim Helmker having fun .
Pat Helmker having fun while Scotty can be seen in the background taking a picture.
Mary Gainer smiles for the camera while Stan looks on.  Maybe Stan is sad because they are leaving the Valley Saturday morning will return in Oct.
What a nice picture of Ardy and Gordie Thompson enjoying friends at dinner.

Everyone seemed to be having a good time visiting with friends and neighbors.  Stan and I look forward to returning in the Fall.  All of you "full timers"  hold the Fort down and miss us while we are gone.  That is all of the Winter Texans.  UMMMM  I can hear you laughing now.  Have a good summer.

Project finished...

At Leisure World Community, you will often see ladies go in and out of the quilt/craft room in the ANNEX building.  They are working on their projects together or at times by themselves.  But, you usually don't hear about the residents who work in private at their home.  There is so much talent here in this park that we don't even see.  Remember back in February we did an article on Mary Beth Chandler.  She gave us a sneak peak of what the quilt would become that she was working on.  This quilt is now finished and will be presented to a grandchild this summer.
In February this is what we got to witness.  So many stitches, here and there and so many long, long hours of love going into this quilt.  "It looks like Mary Beth has stitched the quilt to her feet"...

AND NOW...  you get the first peek at the finished project.  I believe this is called a "wedding ring" quilt.
Beautiful - somebody is going to be happy and keep warm.  Great job Mary Beth.  Thanks for sharing.

Mary Beth and Rob reside at #157 on Queen Palm on the beautiful lot just across from the office.  Mary Beth is full of talent, as many of you have witnessed one of her talents - her huge cream pies donated at the fundraisers here in the park...  Humm, I wonder what she'll surprise us with next.

New Bird Video

Hi all you nature lovers! I have just posted a new video that I have edited together called Mother Nature at Her Finest. It's not perfect becasue there is some shaking going on in some of the clips mainly due to the winds in South Texas that we all love. Most shots were in Texas and were taken during the Leisure World Birding Group outings over the past 5 years.

Leisure World Easter Dinner

Easter dinner at the Leisure World hall was organized by Scott and Rita Boyd, Jim and Beth Staton and Sheila Kramer.  Approximately 50  residents shared a great potluck together, with the ham furnished by management.  Thanks to all...

An "AFTER EASTER LUNCH" was held Tuesday at the hall.  Several came back to enjoy more "HAM" and some trimmings.

Just another fun time getting together with your "neighbors"....

Mary Gainer B-Day

On April 15th, Stan made reservations at Arturo's in Weslaco, for Mary's birthday dinner.
Mary Gainer is no longer "39"....  She turned a few years older on April 15th.
Approximately twenty Leisure World friends shared the celebration with Mary.

After dinner, Arturo's waiters gathered around Mary and sang Happy Birthday to her.  No she didn't get to keep the Sombrero...   Afterwards, back at the Leisure World ANNEX, Ruth Elliott and Dick and Phyllis Connett were ready with ice cream and cake for Mary, with the above friends plus more friends gathering to wish Mary a happy birthday.

We all wished Mary a great evening and hope she'll have many more happy birthdays to add to those years....

Thirty plus Leisure World Residents enjoyed a "dinner out" at Cortino's Italian Restaurant in Weslaco.  Just another way to get to know your "neighbor" and have a good time at Leisure World...

It took three separate grouping of tables to set everyone...Everyone had a great time...

Prayers Needed

Leisure World Chapel Request...

Please remember Trudy Hauserman (a past Leisure World resident) in your prayers.  She just got the word that she has to have a cancer spot removed from her face again, and just today she had a colonoscopy which isn't good news.  The doctor found that the flat polyp that he removed back in 2009 has come back and is cancer.  The surgeon will have to remove a section of colon and it will depend on how much by his decision.  The surgery will be done within the next two to three weeks.  Trudy could use some words of encouragement and a lot of prayers.  She does read this blog...

Another sister (Beverly Pearson) is going through surgery on her hand to remove cancer.  She had her hand operated on recently but doctor is now saying they need to go deeper to get to the roots of the cancer.

Also my brother-in-law Bill McGrean (Barb's husband) is having some heart issues and has been.  At this very moment he has been taken to the hospital and we are waiting to hear something...  Update on Bill:  Had angiogram, three main vessels in heart all blocked, waiting to hear when open heart surgery will be.

I would appreciate if you would please keep both my sisters and brother-in-law in your daily prayers.  Thank you.

Wally Bentt's Knee Situation

I thought I would touch base with everyone regarding my possible knee surgery. I had a visit with the Surgeon and he informed me that my risks were higher than for normal people because of my heart condition. So I opted out of a replacement, and then we had second thoughts as we left his office. So I booked and appointment with my family Doctor for my annual check up and asked him his thoughts. He said, “Go for it,” But then he suggested an alternative. He explained that there is a Doctor in LaCombe, Alberta that is using new technology stem cell treatment that is having a 75 to 90% success rate on knees. They take enough stem cells from your hip bone for 5 injections. They would use 2 for my knees and store the other three should I need it for something else. This supposedly regenerates the cartilage in the joint.

Lorna was talking to a friend on Sunday without knowledge of this treatment who had a friend that went to Mexico and had this treatment for a knee with big success. It sounds promising! And we have heard of other problems being treated successfully with this stem cell technology.

The only drawback is that the procedure costs about $2,000 on top of my Alberta Healthcare. If it works as promised it will be worth every penny. I told my Doctor to book it for me instead of the replacement. If it doesn’t work for me he said I can still opt for the replacement later should I desire. I am looking forward to this.

I will keep you posted on the progress.
