A WEEK IN PANAMA

Marshalltown C of C hosted a weeks
tour of Panama in mid October
Marj Herbig, Jan Scheetz, Jo & Ronald Hersom at the Golden Tower Hotel in Panama City
The canal was built 110 feet wide, vessels are 106 feet wide,

that leaves 2 feet on each side to squeeze through.
Our cruise ship is following a regular cargo ship.
It takes 6 months to get a passage scheduled.
China has built a parallel canal 180 feet wide
for just new extra large cargo ships.
Going north from Panama City through the Gatlin Gap,
an extra 85 feet cut.
Bridge of America on Transcontinental Highway 1 in background.
We visited a Native People village.  The youngans didn't wear those clothes all day.
 The Elder of the group

View from our resort room at Gamboa.
To make the canal, they dammed the river outlet on the Atlantic side.  The resulting lake, Gamboa Lake, feeds water to the canals going both directions.  Panama receives 16 feet of rain each year, which provides enough water to make the system work..

The girls on the Pacific beach.
Only took 20 minutes to get pink.
We had a wonderful week.
Mostly cloudy & only one day with some rain.

Several joined the celebration in the Leisure World Rec Hall in honor of "Bob" Watkins.

Rev. Steven Wagenknecht, Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, Weslaco, Texas (with Thelma)
The Reverend gave a beautiful message in honor of Bob.  Bob had joined the Navy at the age of 17.  He had many stories to share while residing at Leisure World and some of his friends here in the park did share some of the stories.
After the message and "stories" there were snacks to share.  Bob will not be forgotten.

If anyone else has pictures to share of this celebration, please feel free to add them.

Bob Watkins Celebration of Life

A very large turnout of Leisure World residents joined Thelma Watkins and her family to celebrate the life of our late resident and friend, Bob Watkins. The formal program was conducted by Bob & Thelma's pastor, Steven Wagenknecht of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church of Weslaco.

Tuesday Jam Lunch

Gary and I recently helped with the Tuesday Jam lunch. Our group put together menus in a kitchen facility that has all the equipment to make it possible to serve a large group.Fund raising through the Leisure World Association volunteers  made it possible  to expand the kitchen to what it is today. Leisure World residents and other Parks enjoy the lunches before the jam session of local talent. It was great to see how many contribute to make it a successful event.  From organized purchasing of groceries, people responsible for handling the money, making the tea and coffee,to responses for desserts to be made, people were willing to step in and help. When the kitchen volunteers finished serving, more volunteers stepped in for clean up. What a cooperative and cohesive bunch of people. We are happy to be residents of fine folks of Leisure World!

Shuffle update

Well it is better late than never.  I want to thank all of those that helped with the Don Johnk Memorial tournament in November and the Leisure World National tournament in December.  We would not be able to host those tournaments without the help from the community; from the kitchen crew to the parkers, polishers, gofers, and referees, it is all needed and appreciated.
While the weather has wreaked havoc with the tournaments across the valley due to cold and rain, all have been completed.  Leisure World shufflers have been successful in several tournaments and a couple of those were completed in adverse conditions.  John Soetebier and Jan Larson placed second in the main at the Don Johnk tournament; Maria Galvan paired with Ron Tyler of Texas Trails to take fourth in consolation at the Texas Trails tournament; Galen McCrary places second in the main at the Snow to Sun singles tournament; Galen and Mary McCrary placed fourth in the main at the Leisure World National tournament; and Galen McCrary and Clarence Thomas placed fourth in the main at the Pine to Palm doubles tournament.
As a reminder, we have friendly shuffle at 8:30 on Monday, Wednesday & Friday and hoss collar at 8:30 Saturday.  Clarence and Galen are giving shuffle lessons at 9:00 Thursday mornings.  Our numbers are down this year but we are having a blast.  So if you have never shuffled or are a new shuffler, join us for a great time.

Leisure World Chapel: Joys and Concerns

Prayers are needed:

Darold Bergemann is scheduled to have an aorta valve replacement on Feb 6th.  He had a replacement 9 years ago,and it has began leaking. Doctoring has kept them from coming to the park this year.  Please pray all goes well with this surgery and that he and Mary will be able to join us in Leisure World.

Don and Darla Angelbeck, park residents in unit 114, continue to struggle with health problems.  Darla had a leg amputation last fall.  Both have health issues.  Any visits or assistance would be
greatly appreciated.

Charles Belcher had aorta repair last summer, however it seems to be leaking and he is hoping to receive an appointment soon to take care of the problem.

Rayma Bitters fell and fractured her shoulder.

Good news:

Marj Herbig's son has greatly improved and she will be returning to the park.
